As Earth Day approaches, I’m reminded that the way we live in our homes can have a ripple effect on the health of our planet. The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle to make a difference. Small, thoughtful choices in how we organize, consume and care for our spaces can add up to big environmental wins.
Here are a few of my favourite eco-friendly organizing tips to celebrate Earth Day — and every day:
Start with a “Green Sweep”
Instead of diving straight into buying bins and baskets, take a mindful walk through your space. What do you already have that can be repurposed? Glass jars make excellent storage for pantry items. Shoeboxes can corral cords or craft supplies. Before you toss, pause and ask: Can I reuse this?
Let Go, Responsibly
Decluttering can be green too. As you let go of what no longer serves you, think beyond the garbage bag. Donate, recycle, sell, or offer items on your local Buy Nothing group. That old toaster or pile of journals might be treasure to someone else.
Reduce First, Then Contain
Too often, people organize clutter instead of editing it. Be ruthless (but kind) about what stays. The fewer items you have, the fewer resources you need to store and maintain them — and the less you'll consume in the future.
Eco-Friendly Cleaning While You Organize
As you clear out spaces, give them a natural clean. Ditch the toxic sprays and reach for eco-friendly options like vinegar, baking soda, or my personal fave: the Full Circle Dust Whisperer Microfiber Duster — reusable, sustainable, and shockingly good at banishing dust bunnies.
Choose Sustainable Storage
When you do need new storage, opt for sustainable materials like bamboo, metal, or recycled plastic. Bonus points if it's secondhand! Thrift stores and online marketplaces often have affordable, durable solutions — no extra packaging required.
Set Up a Simple Recycling Station
Make recycling (and composting, if your city supports it) easy and accessible. When it's easy, it sticks. We used our compost on our romaine lettuce and grew a remarkable 10 lb head of Romaine!
Celebrate Every Green Win
Perfection isn’t the goal—intentional, consistent action is.
