As an eco-friendly professional organizer, I believe that peace of mind starts with preparation. On National PrepareAthon! Day, we’re reminded that emergencies like wildfires and earthquakes don’t wait for us to get organized. Are you prepared for the unexpected? The time to prepare is now—and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Start Where You Are

Preparedness doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with the basics and build from there:

  1. Create an Emergency Plan

    1. Discuss with your household how to respond to different scenarios (fire, quake, flood).

    2. Identify safe meeting spots and contacts outside your area.

    3. Don't forget your pets!

  1. Create or Refresh Your Go Kit

    Include essentials like:

    1. Water (2L per person per day for 3 days)

    2. Non-perishable food

    3. Flashlight & batteries

    4. First aid kit

    5. Medications & copies of prescriptions

    6. Cash (ATMs may be down)

    7. Chargers, sanitation supplies, and masks

  1. Digitally & Physically Organize Vital Documents

    1. Store copies of IDs, insurance and medical info in one accessible place (paper and digital versions).

    2. Use waterproof folders or fireproof containers.

  1. Prepare Seasonally

    1. With summer around the corner, now is the time to prepare for wildfires.

    2. Clear dry brush from around your home.

    3. Know your local evacuation zones.

    4. Have an air purifier and N95 masks on hand in case of smoke.

If you're in an earthquake zone, now is also a great time to:

  1. Secure tall furniture to walls

  2. Create a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” plan

  3. Know where your gas and water shut-offs are

Community Counts

One of the most beautiful things about National PrepareAthon! Day is it reminds us: preparedness is collective. Whether you’re organizing your own household, volunteering with local emergency programs, or simply sharing tips with friends, your actions ripple out.

How You Can Participate Today:

  • Review your family’s plan

  • Check expiry dates on emergency kit supplies

  • Organize important papers

  • Talk with neighbours about community preparedness

  • Share your prep on social media using #NationalPrepareAthonDay

Emergencies may be unpredictable, but being prepared is empowering. As someone who believes in sustainable, simplified living, I can assure you: organization plays a key role in resilience.
