The Urge to Purge: Why This Time of Year Makes Us Want to Lighten the Load

Garage full of clutter

If you’ve recently found yourself standing in a room, hands on hips, thinking “Why do I have SO. MUCH. STUFF?” — welcome. You are completely normal.

This time of year has a funny way of stirring up the urge to purge. The light shifts. Seasons change. We crave freshness, space, and ease. Suddenly that overstuffed closet, crowded cupboard, or mystery pile in the corner feels… loud.

And here’s the thing: clutter isn’t just about objects. It’s about decisions postponed, emotions attached, and “what if” scenarios quietly taking up real estate in your home and your head. Let’s talk about what’s eating at you - and how to gently, confidently let it go.

When Stuff Starts to Weigh on You

That flustered, restless feeling? It usually shows up when:

  • You’re tired of managing things instead of enjoying your space

  • You can’t find what you actually use

  • You feel guilty about what things cost

  • You’re hanging on “just in case”

  • Your family has outgrown items, but the stuff didn’t get the memo

Clutter has a way of whispering (or shouting): “You’ll deal with me later.” But later keeps getting busy. It’s like carrying around a backpack full of rocks - you don’t always notice the weight until you stop and try to move faster.

Clothes: The Biggest Emotional Minefield

Closets are where logic goes to die. Here are some of the most common reasons clothes stick around far too long:

  • “But it was expensive…” That money is already spent. Keeping an unworn item doesn’t get it back - but selling it might. Even better? Someone else gets to enjoy it now.

  • “What if I fit into it again?” Ask yourself: Does keeping this make me feel hopeful - or pressured? Your closet should support the body you have today, not judge it.

  • “What if I need it someday?” If you’ve been saying “what if” for years, that someday has likely passed. Trust that future-you will figure it out (she’s resourceful like that).

  • “It’s perfectly good…” Great! That means it’s perfect for resale or donation. Items don’t need to die in your closet to prove their worth.

Quick tip: If you wouldn’t buy it again today, it’s probably ready to go.

Things You Mean to Sell (But Haven’t)

Ah yes - the “I’ll sell that” pile. Be honest:

  • Do you have the energy to photograph, list, message, and follow up?

  • Has it been sitting there for months (or years)?

  • Is the pile quietly stressing you out?

If selling feels doable - set a clear deadline. No action by that date? Donate and move on. Space is valuable too. Remember, sometimes the best sale is the one you don’t have to make because you’ve already freed yourself.

Family Stuff That No Longer Fits Your Life

Kids grow. Interests change. Lifestyles shift. What once made sense might now feel like clutter:

  • Toys that no one touches

  • Sports gear from a past phase

  • Furniture that no longer works

  • Hobby supplies for hobbies long abandoned

Letting go isn’t erasing memories. It’s acknowledging growth. A good question to ask: “Is this supporting how we live now?” If the answer is no, it’s okay to say goodbye. Your home should be a reflection of your current life, not a museum of the past.

A Gentle Way to Start (Without Overwhelm)

You don’t need to do everything. Just start somewhere. Try one of these:

  1. One drawer

  2. One shelf

  3. One category (shoes, scarves, mugs - you choose)

Put on music. Set a timer. Stop before you’re exhausted. Momentum builds confidence. And hey, if you find a forgotten treasure or two, that’s just a bonus!

The Real Win: How You’ll Feel

Less stuff means:

  • Easier mornings

  • Faster decisions

  • More breathing room

  • A home that feels calmer, not chaotic

That urge to purge isn’t random - it’s intuition nudging you toward lighter, simpler living. So if things have been eating at you lately… maybe it’s time to let them go instead. Your space (and nervous system) will thank you.
